PMD was established in the year 1947 and functions under the umbrella of Ministry of Defence. PMD is equipped with state of the art meteorological observatories and forecasting techniques for flood prediction, computerized weather forecasting, tsunami early warning, earthquake and nuclear explosion detection, incorporating radar, satellite and information technology. Apart from meteorology, the Department is also extending services in the fields of hydrology, seismology, climatology and geomagnetism. PMD is also a member of World Meteorological Organization. Pakistan Meteorological Department head office is located in Islamabad and regional offices in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta.
